I am replacing garage door and I am confused about r-ratings for insulation those garage doors come with. Have seen from r-6.58 to r-18. Have seen several with the r-6.58 rating and am wondering if the ones with the higher rating is overkill.

I live in Ohio and there is living space above and next to the one car garage, so I’m concerned with having it insulated as well as possible, because I don’t want to pay a lot for energy and heating. I don’t want to heat the winter.

if there is a living space above no its not overkill. The garage door is the biggest hole you have in your house. I have never seen one with 18 but if you found one and its reasonable, get it.

The higher the R rating the better. I have a similar set of doors, i.e. with living space. I went for the highest and now the doors do not feel hot in summer or cold in winter (on the inside!) It does make a big difference; not as bad as having the doors open, but still big. It is well worth the extra for the extra insulation.
